SightsThe city of Kos is built over a colossal archeological Site whereas further sites come to light every year from the Ancient Classical Era, the Byzantine and Medieval age, the Turkish and Italian occupation. The Asclepieion, Hippocrates' perennial Plane Tree, the Medieval Castle, still preserved in excellent condition, the ruins of the ancient City, the ancient Conservatory, the Roman House, the ancient Bathe, the ancient Stadium with the Xyster, the House of Europe are some of the findings that one can easily visit by taking a walk. Findings of the different eras are also collected in the city's Museum. |
About Kos
Kos belongs to the Aegean Sea complex of islands called Dodecanissa. It is the third biggest island of the complex and, not without reason, is considered to be a powerful dynamic destination.
Kos History
| A crossroads of people and civilizations, Kos was inhabited in the early years of the Bronze Age (2900-2100 BC) and has earned a distinct place in the history. The island is also known as the island of Hippocrates, the father of Medicine. Hippocrates, whose teaching laid the foundations of medical science, was born, lived and was active on Kos (460-357 BC). After his death, the Asclepeion was founded on the island, being visited by thousands of patients. This universal heritage monument acquired great fame in Greece as well as all over the world. Even nowadays all doctors take the Hippocratic Oath. |
